FAQs for new members

These are the most common questions we receive from those seeking to learn more about youth track & Ventura Tigres. Some of the information is specific to the current season about to begin.

Q: When can I register my son/daughter?
A: Registration occurs in December each year.

Q: Are there tryouts to join Tigres?
A: No, Tigres is open to all regardless of skill level.

Q: How old does my child have to be to sign up? (Or what’s the oldest my child can be to participate?)
A:The Age Groups for the 2024 season are as follows:

2024 Age Groups
8U (Gremlins) —  2016 – 2017
10U (Bantams) —  2014 – 2015
12U (Midgets) — 2012 – 2013
Youth & Intermediate — 2006 – 2011

Q: Does Tigres have an enrollment limit?
A: Yes, each team in VCYTC is limited to 300 athletes. We also limit each age group to ensure balanced number of athletes per coach. If you are trying to register only to find out there is no room left, we do have a waitlist that we maintain until late February. The waitlist is first come first serve.

Q: When does practice start and how long is the season?
A: Practices start usually the second week of February, and our first meet is in March. The season usually ends at the end of May/Early June.

Q: What days are practices on?
A: Practices vary by age group – you can see the practice schedule a: https://www.venturatigres.org/practice/

Q: Tell me about the meets? (When,  where and how many?)
 A: Once we have our first meet (Practice meet @ home) – Meets are typically every Saturday until the end of the season. (The only exception to this is our 2-day invitational meet hosted by our conference (VCYTC) and our sister conference (SCYTFC).

Most of the meets are held in Ventura County at one of the 8 clubs home track (Buena High, Oxnard High, Nordhoff High/Ojai, Camarillo High, Fillmore High, Newbury Park High, Moorpark High or Thousand Oaks High).  For the invitational meet, it can either be in Simi Valley, Santa Clarita or somewhere more local.  We also have a championship meet which has historically been at Santa Barbara City College but the venue for 2017 is pending.

There are 6 regular season meets, plus a practice meet. Then there is the invitational, a league finals meet, county championship meet and co-conference championship meet.

Q: Are practices and meets required?
A: We encourage athletes to participate as much as they can, but there is no requirement. Athletes, however, will get out of it everything they put into it.

Q: Do parents have to be involved?
A: The amount of work required to host a meet is enormous and requires help from everyone. For this reason, there is a mandatory volunteer requirement of EACH family. For every home meet, we require a parent from each family registered to work either an AM or PM shift. Failure to do so will result in NOT being able to register during priority or open registration.

We do understand that there are reasons why you may not be able to make a home meet, for that reason there are opportunities to make up one of your shifts – usually at the invitational or other post-season meet. If you already anticipate being out of town, you can indicate such during registration.

Q: I love to volunteer/coach – is there more I can do?
A: We welcome all the help we can get – if you like to coach, you can include that information during the registration and our coaches coordinator will be in touch shortly after. For anything else you can help with, please contact us here.
