Practice Meet This Saturday March 7th

Hello 8U Gremlins! (We are transitioning the group name from Gremlins to 8U)Our practice meet is this Saturday, March 7th at the Buena Track. The event options are limited for this meet since the primary focus is training the volunteers. For this meet only 8U will be able to participate in 2 running events and Long Jump. Our running choices for this meet are:4X100, 400, 100

Our only field option for this meet is the Long Jump.

Parents, please help your 8U child with the following for all meets:  1) they should know what events they signed up to run (we will help try to make sure they are at events but it is their responsibility to know what they are running), and 2) after their race they should get off the field and go back to the 8U tent in the stands – this is their home base – this is where we look for them when it is time to stage for an event and walk them back on the track – if they aren’t there, we won’t go looking for them.

The order of running events is:

4×100

400

100

Field events will include:

Long Jump (8U usually go first at 8:30am so be on time!).

Arrival time: 8:00 sharp in the 8U tent in the stands to get race bibs and organize relays as needed

Start time: 8:30am

Sign-ups will be on the clipboards at practice starting tomorrow. If your child in not going to attend the meet, please have him/her draw a line through his/her name. Please do not email me after Friday at noon to add your child to the roster for the meet.  If your child signs up for a relay, please make sure they have attended practice to work on this skill – if we don’t have a multiple of 4, we may be unable to run everyone in a relay – please know I will do my best to give everyone a chance.  Additionally, if your child signs up for a relay their other 3 teammates are counting on them to show up – if they can’t make it at the last minute, please let me know ASAP.

Go 8U Girls and Boys!

Coach Jim

Great First Week!

Gremlin Families,

Great first week of practice. I think the kids are having a lot of fun.

Couple reminders:

  • Please sign in and out. I want to make sure all the kids are picked up and safe.
  • Please remind your kids to bring everything home. I already have a new water bottle that was left behind.
  • Label everything
  • Have the kids wear sweatshirts, not jackets. Wearing jackets unzipped is affecting their running. If they need to wear a jacket, we want to have it zipped up.

We still need more person/family to serve as team parents.  It requires sitting in the stands with the Gremlins during the meets – we only need one adult to be there at all times so it could be alternated between people/families.  This role fulfills your Tigres volunteer requirement

Carmelita Everard is Tigres’ Volunteer Coordinator.  Carmelita can be contacted at c805everard@aol.com

Lastly, I will be out of town on Tuesday, but the other coaches will be there to make sure that the kids have a safe and fun practice!!

Go Gremlins!!

Coach Jim

Gremlin practice today – Meet on grass near the basketball courts

We were just informed that we cannot use the track tonight because the Buena Soccer Team has a home game.

We will be holding practice tonight on the JV Baseball field.

Park in the same parking lot as you would for regular practice. just walk toward the basketball courts instead of the track.

Sorry for the short notice.

Gremlins Parent Meeting Recap – First Practice Tomorrow

Hello Gremlin families!
Thank you for attending the parent meeting tonight! Your Gremlin coaching staff is really looking forward to our first practice Tomorrow Tuesday 2/4 at 4:30

I wanted to recap the most important information that we covered. See below.
Head Coach: Jim Montgomery
Assistant Coaches:
Dominka Montgomery
Dave Gilbert
Stephen Isbell
Kristen Nielsen
Laura Traub
Basia Deboer
Leah Kahler
Sean Feeney
Ryan Nation
Jennifer Miller
Miriam Lancaster

Team Parent:
***We need one more person/family to serve this role. It requires sitting in the stands with the Gremlins during the meets – we only need one adult to be there at all times so it could be alternated between people/families. This role fulfills your Tigres volunteer requirement (as do the assistant coaching positions).

Goals for the season:
1. Safety
2. Fun and an appreciation for the benefits of sports and exercise
3. Good Sportsmanship
4. Developing your athlete’s abilities and helping them to achieve their goals
5. Making friends

Questions and information:
The most efficient way to communicate with me is through the website (email: gremilns@venturatigres.org). I am also available for questions after practice, and I will keep our website updated on a regular basis, especially once the meets begin in March. You can text me as well: 805-368-6999
Practice:
Gremlins will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-5:45pm. Practice begins promptly at 4:30 at Buena High School. Please have your athlete there a few minutes early to get their name tag and get settled. Our warm-ups are equally important to the workout, and we need your athlete to be there on time.
Parents are welcomed to stay and watch in the stands, but only athletes and coaches are allowed on the field. At the end of practice, we will keep our Gremlins on the field until they get a visual on their ride home. There will still be runners on the track when our practice is over so please be mindful of the runner traffic before you call them over to you. We will be teaching our athletes track safety as well.
Sign in and out:
Sign in and out sheets will be on the fence at the track. Please remember to sign in and out! If you do not sign out, be prepared for a phone call from me checking on whether or not you have your athlete with you. Please be on time for pickup; a coach must stay with your athlete until you arrive.
Preparation for practice:
Please have your athlete dressed and ready to go. Our athletes LOVE their Tigres gear, which means many of them have the same water bottles, bags, and sweatshirts. PLEASE label everything!! If they need a snack before practice, please have it be something easy to digest. They are only allowed water in their water bottles on the track.
Attendance:
We understand that other sports, illness, and injury may conflict with practice. You do not need to email me if your athlete will not attend practice, but I would appreciate knowing if they are injured as well as if they are not going to attend a meet.
Meets:
Gremlins will have the option to participate in the following events:
Field – Long Jump (this is the only field event available for Gremlins)
Relay – 4X100 (this is the only relay available for Gremlins)
Distance – 800 and 1600
Sprints – 100, 200, and 400
Athletes can participate in 4 events at each meet with a maximum of 3 running events plus the long jump. Some athletes will already know what events they are interested in, while others are still deciding. We are going to encourage them to try everything until they decide which events they like the most. Event sign ups will be on Thursdays on a separate clipboard on the fence at the track.
Setting up the relay teams for the 4X100 takes time. Once you select the relay, your athlete is making a commitment to three other athletes on the team. Relay teams will be created based upon times and attendance. There may be times that I cannot build a full relay team due to numbers, but I will do my best to make certain it is a fair process.
I will send out more information regarding meets as the dates come closer, but for your future planning, the meet schedule on the website is accurate and meets typically go from 8:00am – 2:30pm or so. Gremlins do not participate in the meet on April 3-4 – enjoy the weekend off!
If you pre-ordered uniforms (singlet & shorts), they will be available at a future practice closer to the first meet. All your child needs is running shoes (no spikes at this age).
We look forward to greeting former and new athletes Tomorrow!!
See you Tomorrow,

Jim Montgomery

Gremlins Picnic Info

Hello Gremlin families,

That’s a season wrap!  Well done Gremlins! I have enjoyed watching your children gain confidence in themselves, nurture a love of running and support each other as great teammates.  This last meet demonstrated all of the above!  Thank you for the opportunity to be their coach – it’s been a great ride!

The next time we will all be together is at the Tigres picnic on Sunday May 19 from 12-3pm at the VUSD office off Stanley – we meet on the fields.  Tigres provides pizza.  Gremlins are in charge of bringing a dessert for 12.  We will have lunch, gather for Tigres-wide announcements and thanks, and then meet briefly as Gremlins to receive ribbons and team gifts – you don’t want to miss this party!  Bring beach chairs and/or a blanket to enjoy the picnic.  Hope to see you all there!

Good luck to our runners in the upcoming conference and co-conference championships!

Autumn

Thank you & Fillmore HS meet info

Hello Gremlin families,

What a fun practice yesterday!  Coaches and athletes alike had a blast!  HUGE THANK YOU to all those who contributed water balloons – we had quite an arsenal. Special thanks to Brian Scalfaro & Lizzy Isbell for bringing homemade treats – the kiddos had quite a feast of treats.  What a great way to celebrate our last practice!

Reminder that our meet tomorrow is at Fillmore HS.  As you may recall, they don’t allow pop-up tents in the bleachers.  Look for our Gremlin contingency in the stands – our team parent will be there.  We may have a tent on the field to hang out in immediately between events – waiting for final word on that.  As always, please arrive by 8am for stickers and warmups for long jump; please check-in with me by 8:30am for relays or else the spot may be reassigned.

Lastly, don’t forget about our Tigres potluck picnic on 5/19 12-3pm at VUSD offices – Gremlins should bring dessert.  You don’t want to miss this fun event – bring a blanket and/or chairs to hang out.

See you tomorrow!

Gremlins – Last week of the season & 5/4 meet prep

Hello Gremlin families,

It’s hard to believe this is the last week of the season for most of our Gremlins.  This past meet was such a joy to watch – our athletes have progressed beautifully over the course of season.  Their confidence in themselves and independence shines through when they run and in between events. They sure were bursting with energy this meet!   We had a number of PRs including races where our athletes pushed each other resulting in outstanding performances.

This is a reminder about our schedule for the week:

Practice Tuesday April 30 & Thursday May 2 as usual 4:30-5:30pm.  Our Thursday practice will be a fun one filled with games. If any parent can donate filled water balloons, please contact me ASAP – these make the last practice super fun!  I am still waiting water balloon and treat donations – so please let me know if you can assist – THANK YOU!

Last meet at Fillmore High School – Saturday, May 4, 8:30 am (EVERYONE PARTICIPATES!) Signups will look a little different. Athletes who have qualified for championships cannot compete in those events at the 5/4 meet.  Everyone can only run in events they have previously tried – no new events can be attempted this meet.  I will have blacked out those events that are off limits.

End of Season Team Picnic  — Sunday, May 19 from noon to 3 p.m. (Look for more details soon)

Lastly, CONGRATULATIONS to our Gremlins who have qualified in individual events for the conference championship meet.

Gremlins – End of Season Schedule

Hello Gremlin families,

I look forward to seeing you all out there tomorrow at our last home meet! Reminder that Gremlins doing long jump need to be in the tent with their meet sticker at 8am; those doing relay need to check-in with me by 8:30am or else their spot could be lost.  Looks like we will have another cool meet so dress appropriately – make sure all gear is labeled!  Check the lost in found at practices if you are missing anything.

Reminder, we have 2 meets left in which all Gremlins participate. Our remaining schedule is below:

Tigres last home meet — This Saturday, April 27 at 8:30 am

Practice Tuesday April 30 & Thursday May 2 as usual 4:30-5:30pm.  Our Thursday practice will be a fun one filled with games. If any parent can donate filled water balloons, please contact me ASAP – these make the last practice super fun!

Gremlin meet recap & info for 4/27 meet at Buena HS

Hello Gremlin families,

What a wonderful and chilly home meet!  I am so proud of how hard our Gremlins competed and for their sportsmanship.  A great example was that happened in a 200m heat – one of our Tigres Gremlins gave it his all and just edged out a Cosmos runner at the finish – our Tigres Gremlin immediately gave him a high five and praised him for a great race. Just awesome.

We only have 2 weeks left of practice so let’s make these great ones.  The meet on 4/27 at Buena HS is the last meet where runners can qualify for championship meets so it’s a great time for a PR in your best events.  For the meet, please remember to arrive by 8am for long jump and to check-in with me by 8:30am for relay.

See you all Tuesday!

Autumn
